Tonel is an artist, critic, and curator who shares his time in Canada and Cuba. He has exhibited extensively including group shows at the Havana, Sao Paulo, Berlin, and Venice biennials. His texts on Cuban contemporary art have been published in art journals, exhibition catalogues and books. He is the author of Loss and Recovery of the City (In the Cinema), a bilingual edition by White Wine Press and Pisueña Press, 2010. He has taught at the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada; the Center for Latin American Studies and the Art and Art History Department, Stanford University, California; and ISA (High Art Institute) in Havana.
