Rachel Withers

Critic and art writer

I have been researching and writing on contemporary art since the mid-1980s and have contributed to a wide variety of specialist and mainstream publications: the catalogues of the Sydney and Venice Biennales, Phaidon’s compendiums Vitamin P and Vitamin 3-D, Tate Modern’s first Handbook, the Guardian, NewStatesman and the Nordic daily Aftonbladet. I am a frequent contributor to Artforum International.

2007 saw the publication of my first book, a monograph on the work of Roman Signer, & I am currently collaborating with Signer on a new project that explores his extensive collection of illustrated books. In 2014 I completed a comprehensive series of texts on the work of live artist La Ribot, covering her work from the 1980s to 2014, and these are readable on the artist's website, www.laribot.com. I am presently Secretary of AICA's UK branch, and in 2014-15 served on the Jury of the International Awards for Art Criticism.

I have recently been contributing articles to the academic news and comment website The Conversation, and am at work at Bath School of Art and Design, Bath Spa University, on the establishment of a new B.A. Honours degree in the History of Art and Design (start date September 2015). Details of this course and how to apply are available at http://www.bathspa.ac.uk/schools/art-and-design/courses/undergraduate/history-of-art-and-design
