Juan Genovés Reconsidered

  • Date8th September 2022

  • LocationMarlborough Gallery, 6 Albemarle Street, London W1 S4BY

Join Bartomeu Marí and Rui Cepeda in a conversation chaired by Sarah Wilson, at the Marlborough Gallery, 6 Albemarle Street, London W1 S4BY, on 8 September 2022, at 6.30 pm.

This conversation coincides with the exhibition of Valencia-born artist June Genovés. From his childhood memories of the Spanish Civil War through to his anti-fascist work under Franco’s dictatorship in the 1960s with the Hondo Group and later, his militant, left-wing position never wavered. Crowds, his most characteristic motif, will be a focus of this discussion, just as  they dominated his London and New York shows at Marlborough in 1967.

Bartomeu Mari is an independent curator and writer, former director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Seoul, of the Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona (MACBA) and of the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam.

Rui Cepeda, AICA UK’s Membership Secretary, works as an art critic for journals such as the  Diário de Notícias and The Art Newspaper, in art management, as an events consultant, and on a PhD in Arts and Cultural Management. He organised the cultural festival Trienal in Portugal and the VASA-Project online programme of exhibitions.

Sarah Wilson is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. She has recently profiled Maggi Hambling and the Spanish contemporary of Juan Genovés, Eduardo Arroyo for the Marlborough Gallery in New York. She is a member of the AICA-UK Executive Committee.

The conversation will take place during the private view of the exhibition, 6-8 pm.
