A curator, art historian and consultant, I am currently on the Executive Board of AICA-UK and was chair of the Curatorial Committee of the Association for Art History 2019-24. I worked at Tate as Head of International Art and latterly as Head of Art Historical Research. I have special expertise in the field of surrealism and more generally twentieth-century art. At Tate I curated major exhibitions, established the research journal Tate Papers, and led the programme of online scholarly publishing.
I studied Modern History at the University of Oxford and have a PhD in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. I held a Junior Research Fellowship at Somerville College, Oxford, and have been a Getty Scholar, a Fellow of the Dora Maar Foundation in Ménerbes and the Thaw Senior Fellow at the Morgan Library and Museum, New York. My publications include Man Ray: Writings on Art (Getty Publishing 2016), Lost Art (Tate Publishing 2013) and Surrealism: Desire Unbound (Tate Publishing 2001).
