1967 One-man exhibition of paintings, Benet St.Gallery, Benet St. Cambridge.
1967-1968 Art Editor of Granta, Cambridge.
1970-1972 Part-time teaching on Foundation Course at Norwich Art School.
1978 Chairman of New Premises committee of Norfolk and Norwich Film Theatre Ltd that established ‘Cinema City’ as Norfolk’s Regional Film Theatre.
1978 Member of the Committee that set up the Norwich Arts Centre
1964-2005 Over 3000 illustrations for a number of science books and magazines,
including the best sellers Watson’s Molecular Biology of the Gene, and Alberts et al Molecular Biology of the Cell and Essential Cell Biology.
2006 I conceived, curated, and wrote the book for, the Wellcome Trust-funded ‘Making Faces’ exhibition that was a central and successful part of the BA Festival of Science, 2006.
2009-present Chairman of Norfolk Contemporary Art Society (NCAS).
2009 Curator of ‘Photo-ID’ exhibition, funded by Wellcome Trust, and wrote the associated book, Photo-ID.
2009 Plenary lecture, ‘Biology as a Substrate for Contemporary Art’, at AICA International meeting in Dublin
2008 to present, co-curated open exhibitions of contemporary art in the Forum, Norwich
2015/16 curated exhibitions of the work of sculptor/artist Ana Maria Pacheco in four locations in Norwich, The Castle Museum, Norwich University of the Arts, The Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral. Wrote the Exhibition Guide.

I have published more than 150 papers in refereed journals, and I am also co-author of the major textbooks, ‘Molecular Biology of the Cell’ now in its 6th edition (20015), ‘Essential Cell Biology’ now in its 5th edition (2018), and ‘Plant Cell Walls’ (2010). I have also edited a two volume ‘Handbook of Plant Science’ (2007).
‘Sci-Art: What are the Problems’, was published in The Biochemist Dec 2006, 7-11.
Awarded OBE for services to Plant Science, 2007.
