Marq Smith

I’m an enthusiastic and careful academic, curator, editor, and commissioner, with twenty-five years experience working in higher education, mostly in an art school context; and I love collaborating with cultural organisations on exhibitions, publications, and public programming.

I’m Founder and Editor-in-Chief of ‘Journal of Visual Culture’, on the Board of The Arts Catalyst and the Live Art Development Agency, and an Advisory Group Member of Inclusive Practices at Wellcome Collection.

As an academic, I’m Programme Leader of the MA Museums & Galleries in Education at UCL Institute of Education, London, and Professor of Artistic Research at Vilnius Academy of Arts, Lithuania.

As a curator, my exhibition include ‘Blood & Bones: Living with Cancer’ (UCLH, 2019), ‘Do The Right Thing’ (Titanikas Gallery, Vilnius, 2019), ‘Solitary Pleasures’ (Freud Museum, 2018), and ‘How to Construct a Time Machine’ (MK Gallery, 2016). I was Curator of the most recent Nida Doctoral School at the Research Pavilion/Lithuanian Pavilion/Laboratorioccupato Morion in Venice entitled ‘Fight the Power: We the Ungovernable’ (2019).

As a writer, I’ve published widely on arts education, research-as-praxis, and the archival impulse, as well as on the art, visual, material, and immaterial culture of ‘the human’ in capitalist modernity.
