I write mainly about lost or forgotten modes of Islamic art-making and visual culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This has included a Penn State Press book on mural painting in late nineteenth-century Tunisia (Qayrawan: The Amuletic City), a monograph on the Algerian artist Mohammed Racim (forthcoming with Edinburgh University Press), and a variety of shorter pieces published by outlets such as the American Historical Review and NKA: Journal of Contemporary African Arts.
